Natalia Antelava reports that Uzbek women are being forcibly sterilised by the state. According to her report, it seems that this policy is not detrimentally impacting its relations with the US or the EU.
On March 22 2012, the Economist published an interview with Secretary of State Clinton. The interview is insightful and raisies some interesting questions about the US supporting gender equality around the world. Of particular interest to this project are the complications that arise in its balancing interests, for example, in supporting women's rights whilst also campaigning for a negotiated peace settlement with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Can the two realistically work hand-in-hand?
The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) produced a report in June 2011 called Oversight and Better Collaboration Needed for Sexual Assault Investigations and Adjudications. The 42 page report recommended that the Department of Defense improve procedures for conducting sexual assault investigations, better monitor and evaluate the investigations and related training, and to better consolidate all services' resources.
